DETACHMENT COMMANDER’S PROJECT

The Sons of The American Legion Detachment Commander’s Project for 2016-2017 is a joint venture with the American Legion Department Commander’s Project.  As Sons of The American Legion, it is our responsibility to ensure our Veterans are treated with dignity, compassion and above all respect.  We believe The Commander’s Project this year maintains those principles with an emphasis on "mental health" assistance.

PROJECT GOALS

  • “Hope For Veterans”, Provide funding for a full time mental health therapist.
  • Veterans Haven-North, Purchase 15 new computers and 30 new computer chairs.
  • Veterans Haven-South, Build a 12 feet gazebo on the edge of the woods.

COMMUNITY HOPE-Creating a brighter future

Community Hope, located on the grounds of the Lyons VA facility, helps individuals, veterans and their families overcome mental illness, addiction, homelessness and poverty by providing housing and support services.  They are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1985 by families of young adults whose lives were impacted by severe depression and other debilitating mental illnesses.  In 2001 they expanded their residential programs and support services to reach homeless veterans struggling with mental health issues and combat induced trauma.  Today Community Hope is the leading non-profit in and around New Jersey serving Veterans in need and at risk Veteran families.  Last year Community Hope instituted a pilot program, “Hope For Veterans”.

  • “Hope For Veterans” included a mental health therapist to provide on-site therapy for the residents.  The result of the pilot project was a significant decrease in addiction relapses and fewer hospitalizations for psychiatric issues.  “Hope For Veterans” is in need of a funding grant to continue this on-site therapy program, with the intention of making this a permanent part of their services.
  • Veterans Haven-North project will include the purchase of fifteen (15) new computers and thirty (30) computer chairs.
  • Veterans Haven-South we will erect a twelve feet gazebo at the wood’s edge and patio furniture to provide a place for peace and relaxation.

The cost of this joint project is approximately $121,000.00.  Your contributions large or small will be greatly appreciated.  For proper internal accounting and recognition, Please make checks payable to;

SAL Detachment of NJ and please indicate Detachment Commanders Project on the memo line. Send donations to: David Berenato, Commander's Project Chairman, 8 Bayberry Ct., Cherry Hill, NJ 08003.
